Boro 6 Universidad Catolica 3Sunday, 18 October 2009Boro defeated Universidad Catolica 6-3 in the opening game of the Errea International Futsal Cup, played at Thornaby Pavilion tonight, before winning 12-3 against national league hopefuls East Coast to stamp their authority on the tournament.
Boro stormed out of the blocks and went into an early three goal lead. Jason Kilbride opened the scoring from a corner. before excellent work from Nick Hamblin forced an own goal by the retreating defender and Ryon Leyshon scored the third on a quick counter attack.
Pablo Perez got one back for Universidad Catolica before the game settled down. Boro defended resolutely and even the experience of the Uruguayans couldn't find a way through. The quick counter attacking style of Middlesbrough looked a threat at all times and Robbie Bettson was the next to capitalise with a superb finish and Mat Payne scored his second goal for Boro to make it 5-1 at half-time.
UCU threatened to get back into the game in the second half and Nacho De Leon finished off a fine set move early in the second period and they pressed Boro, wanting to get back into the game. They drew fouls, somewhat gratuitously and Nick Hamblin received a yellow card on 26 minutes. Universidad Catolica were gifted a third, an own goal, and had accrued five fouls against them, including one which resulted in a penalty, placed wide by Fabian Brunetto.
Every foul Boro would now commit was a ten metre penalty, and Universidad Catolica drew their first ten metre penalty with seven minutes left when Nick Hamblin left his foot in the goalkeeper at the other end. He was shown the second yellow card and Boro had 4 players for 2 minutes. The penalty was missed and Boro had to hang on. Jason Kilbride, Ryon Leyshon and Lee Armes were enough for the Uruguayans and two minutes passed and the score was still 5-3.
One more ten metre penalty was missed and other chances went begging but Boro wrapped up the win as Robbie Bettson finished yet another quick counter attack.
Boro didn't have much time to rest as East Coast were next up and with ambitions of getting into the national league they looked stronger than the last time they came to Thornaby. Middlesbrough stamped their authority on the game early on however and goals from David Herbert 2, Lee Armes, Jason Kilbride, Mikey Roberts 3, Immy Rashid 2, Robbie Bettson and Jamie Poole were too much for East Coast, who only managed to score two goals as Boro experimented with a flying goalkeeper and an own goal late on by Jamie Russell gave them something to smile about, but it was an dominating performance by the FA Futsal League North Champions and Boro now sit at the top of the group in the Errea International Futsal Cup.
Chippenham make their bow tomorrow, taking on Middlesbrough at 6pm, before they test their metal against Universidad Catolica at 8pm.
