A group of futsal enthusiasts will be holding a 12-hour marathon game to raise funds for a village in La Union which was destroyed by typhoon ‘Pepeng’.
“The proceeds of this futsal marathon will all go to the villagers in Barangay Sta. Lucia Aringay, La Union whose houses were swept away by the floods caused by typhoon ‘Pepeng’," said former RP futsal coach Manny Batumbacal of irokphilippines during Tuesday’s Philippine Sportswriters Association forum in Manila.
Batumbacal, now working as the University of Asia and the Pacific physical director, revealed that players who will take part in the game will be donating P350 to the cause.
The marathon game will be played on Saturday, Oct. 24, starting at 9:30 a.m. and will run until 9:30 p.m.
Batumbacal said that proceeds from the event will go to the rehabilitation of Barangay Sta. Lucia which was ruined by the flood due to rains brought by typhoon ‘Pepeng’.
“Some the houses were totally ruined while we have reports that some villagers are still missing until now," Batumbacal.
Batumbacal disclosed that online registration in the event is already in full swing and those who want to take part in the fund raising event can visit www.irokphilippines.multiply.com.
But even before the Tuesday's PSA edition ended, Batumbacal got a pledge from Philippine Basketball Association (PBA) commissioner Sonny Barrios, who was also a guest in the forum, that the league will help in the fund-raising event.
Batumbacal said that his group tried to reach the area last week but deep waters made it impossible for them navigate their way to the barangay.
In order to reach the area, Batumbacal asked the Philippine army for help in transporting their relief goods.
