KlueFutsal for Fair TradeThursday, 22/10/09Elevyn, the local platform that connects indigenous and marginalized communities to an international market by championing their handmade crafts, are organizing a futsal tournament for a really good cause: fair trade.
But what is fair trade anyway? In a nutshell, it's about giving credit where credit is due. Fair trade efforts help ensure that producers, workers and exporters in less fortunate areas and countries are paid appropriately, and have a chance at economic sufficiency and stability. As a consumer, buying fair trade products means you are being responsible and boycotting products that exploits underpaid workers, child labour and items produced in sweatshop conditions. For more info on this social movement, check out these sites: Fair Trade UK, Oxfam and Make Trade Fair.
Elevyn's Fair Play for Fair Trade is a futsal tournament to raise funds for the less fortunate communities that they work so tirelessly with. It also aims to raise awareness in the Malaysian society about the importance of fair trade. And newsflash: not all Corporates are evil. This campaign will also highlight businesses that practice fair trade in all their transactions.
They are looking for participants to compete in the futsal tournament. There's a registration fee involved (RM350 before 1 Nov, RM500 after that date) but it all goes to a good course. You will receive pre-paid credits in exchange to purchase items on Elevyn's website - directly helping the poor.
To register and for more info, please check out this website. We are told that there are some very interesting teams participating, including two made up of Chin refugees and a homeless team.
Show some love by kicking some balls!
