Nigerian CompassNAMA Staff in N6 million British visa application scamTuesday, 27 October 2009Police investigations at the Special Fraud Unit (SFU) have found a staff of the Nigerian Airspace Management Agency (NAMA) to be at the helm of affairs of a N6 million fake- visa- application scam at the British High Commission.
Commissioner of police at the SFU, Moses Saba, said that the unit had received a complaint from the British Deputy High Commissioner on October 16, concerning a 16-man gang that presented fake documents to process their visa requests at the commission on September 16, 2009.
The main suspect, one David Aide Obadan who was confirmed to be a member of staff of NAMA had collected the sum of N400, 000 each from 15 persons, with a promise to procuring the British visa for them.
To perfect his deal, Obadan was reported to have used a letter- headed -paper of NAMA, claiming it was from the office of the Managing Director, to make the visa request.
The fake letter presented Obadan and the other 15 applicants as officials and football players of the agency. “With a letter purportedly coming from the office of the Managing director of NAMA, they claimed that the visa request was as approved from the office of Managing Director”, he said.
To authenticate the request, Obadan allegedly wrote that the ‘team’ was to go for a Futsal football tournament that was to be organized by Errea Football International in Middlesbrough, between the 18th and 21st of October,2009.
Obadan had gone on to procure fake bank statements from various banks, as back-up for their visa application.
Unfortunately for Obadan who would have been N6 million richer aside procuring a UK visa for himself, the British High Commission contacted the various banks to ascertain the authenticity of the bank statements of accounts.
The verification exercise revealed that they were all fake documents, thus leading the Deputy Commissioner to put across a complaint to the SFU.
Sounding a note of warning to members of staff of the banks, Saba said that henceforth any bank staff that was linked to giving out a fake statement of account, would be in to face the consequences as prescribed by the law court.
