Gulf Daily NewsFutsal team set for Jordan clashWednesday, October 28, 2009BAHRAIN kick off their campaign in the third Asian Indoor Games in Vietnam today, with the national futsal team set to take on their counterparts from Jordan.
The Games are only scheduled to officially begin on Friday, with the opening ceremony and the first action in other sports. Futsal, however, begins two days early and will continue until November 7, which is the penultimate day of the Games.
Bahrain's futsal team trained yesterday under national team team coach Mahmood Mansoor, with team manager Mohammed Hamad Al Ghunayem in attendance.
Following their drills, the team spoke about their tactics for today's clash, which gets underway at 12noon, Bahrain time.
Bahrain's hopes in futsal will rest on their 12-member squad. The players include skipper Jassim Al Chuban, Abdulla Abbas, Ahmed Mohammed, Ali Mohammed, Hamad Al Rumaihi, Hani Abdulla, Majdi Masa'ad, Mohammed Abdulrazzaq, Mohammed Darwish, Mohammed Al Sindi, Abdulla Al Dossary and Sayed Mohammed Abbas.
Also yesterday, organisers conducted a technical meeting attended by all the participating futsal teams. Bahrain was represented by Mansoor and Al Ghunayem.
Apart from futsal, Bahrain are taking part in four other disciplines in Hanoi. The kingdom will also be fielding teams in indoor athletics, swimming, snooker and video games.
Forty-three nations, all members of the Olympic Council of Asia, are taking part in the Games, which will mark its last edition before merging with the Asian Martial Arts Games. A total of 219 events in 24 sports are on hand this year.
Meanwhile, Bahrain's top triple jump talent Mohammed Yousuf Al Shehabi has pulled out of participating at the Games after spraining his knee during training, the Bahrain Athletics Association (BAA) announced yesterday.
Following medical tests, the national athletics team's doctor ordered Al Shehabi to withdraw from taking part and take at least two weeks of rest with intensive treatment.
BAA president Shaikh Talal bin Mohammed Al Khalifa instructed that Al Shehabi gets immediate care and be given access to some of the best sports medicine facilities in Bahrain and the Gulf.
