Sam's headed for China

11 Nov, 2009

It’s every young players dream to play for his country.
Now Sam Ward of Bonny Hills has taken a big step in his ambitions of becoming a professional footballer with his selection in the Australian Futsal team to tour China early next year.

“I was shocked when I found out. I wasn’t home when the letter arrived and my dad rang me. I’m really happy,” Ward said.

The 17-year-old Camden Haven High student was chosen for the tour after his outstanding effort at the recent National School Titles at Albury in Victoria.

Playing for the Northern NSW Sam played in the defensive line, a position he says is different to where he normally plays on the field.

“I usually play up front in soccer. We didn’t have many strong defenders in the team so I started out there and played well and decided to stay there,” he said.

The move turned out to be a master stroke for the kid who has played football since he could kick a ball.

“It will give me a bit more confidence. I’d like to see how good players are out there and how good you have to be to get anywhere,” Ward said.

However the cost of turning his sporting dreams into reality is not cheap. Ward now has to raise $4,000 for the honour of representing his country, the cost of the tour.

“My school and the Camden Haven Golf club have said they will help my fundraising.” he said.
