University of Bath Futsal Cup - Bath sides entertain crowd in Final

2/11/2009

Team Bath Futsal Club hosted a 6 team friendly Futsal tournament at the University of Bath yesterday. It was an opportunity to give new and existing teams in the South West to prepare for various Futsal competitions coming up from the National League to the University Championships.

The 6 teams were split in two groups for the first half of the competition with Team Bath, Bridgwater College and Glamorgan 2nds in Group 2, and Team Bath Reserves, Gloucester University and Glamorgan 1sts in Group 1.

The standard throughout the day was very good and it was pleasing to see the new Futsal teams play the game in a fluid way rather than reverting to constatn 5 a side dribbling. In group 1, Glamorgans 1sts won the first game beating Gloucester 3-2 in a tight match. Team Bath Reserves then played Glamorgan and it was a cracking game. Glamorgan were 3-1 up at one point only for a Joe Carter hat-trick to see the game finish 4-4 on the whistle. In the final group game Team Bath Reserves had to beat Gloucester by more than two goals to come top of the group and they did just that winning 6-0 and playing some great Futsal.

In Group 2 there were some very high scoring games. Bridgwater College played Glamorgan 2nds in the first group game and won fairly handsomely 10-4. They then played the experienced Team Bath outfit and in patches did well but the experience of the Bath boys shone through and they won the match 6-1. In Team Bath's second match they played a competitive Glamorgan 2nds side who pushed Bath all the way but some clinical finishing and good goal Keepking by Jones in the Bath net helped them to a 5-1 victory leaving the top of the group.

So the play off decider would be between the two Bath sides, a great achievement for the club.

First of all the other placings had to be confirmed. The 5th/6th play off was between Glamorgan 2nds and Gloucester University. Glamorgan played the game very much on the counter attack and there little bit of Futsal knowledge was evident as hey stole 3 back post goals in the game winning it 4-2. Gloucester did well on the ball but tired legs did leave them susceptible to the counter game. In the 3rd/4th place play off Bridgwater College entertained Glamorgan 1sts. This was a another good spectacle as both teams were focused on attacking well.
Bridgwater created several one on one opportunites but the Glamorgan keeper was equal to everything and had a very good day. In the second half Glamorgan began to run away with the game and ended up winning it 6-1 with the experienced Kevin Green as player/coach for Glamorgan leading his team well.

So all to play was the final match. Team Bath started the game well moving the ball around the Reserves diamond but were finding it hard to break it down. However, Captain Ian Parkes broke the deadlock half way through the first half receiving the ball turning and poking it home passed the on rushing goal keeper. The reserves had moments in the first half on the break but couldnt quite find the room to create a shooting opporunity. In the second half the pattern of the match continued and when the Reserves did have some ball, Team Bath countered well and stole a second goal. In the last few minutes the Reserves pushed forward and to their credit won a penalty and Joe Carter smashed the ball home to make the final score Team Bath 2 - 1 Team Bath Reserves.

The whole day was a good advert for Futsal in the South West and for the Club and it is hoped next year the tournament will grow and become a National Tournament.
