Futsal for free

18/11/2009

Erfan Hamad Azyze, 13, Subang Jaya
Futsal is now a favourite sports played by both boys and girls. It is my favourite sports and I play it with friends once a week. We normally play from 8am to 10am at a futsal court in SS18, Subang Jaya, Selangor.

As the futsal court is near my school, it is very convenient for us to walk to school after the game. It is an outdoor futsal court. It has nettings on all sides so we don’t have to walk far when the ball is out of the play area. The court’s surface is made of cement, but it’s smoother to play here than on turf or grass.

The futsal court is also a place where I can meet up with friends and make new friends. Sometimes we play against students of another school. Perhaps the reason many people play here is it’s free of charge. As it’s based on the first-come, first-served basis, there are people playing here almost all the time.

You should come and join us one day. And if you do not know how to play futsal, there’s also a basketball court right next to it, or you can just watch us play.

FUTSAL FACTS

• The origin of futsal can be traced back to Uruguay in 1930 when Juan Carlos Ceriani came up with a five-a-side version of soccer for youth competition using basketball-sized courts, indoors and outdoors, without the use of side walls.

• The name “Futsal” is from the Spanish words for “Hall”, which is Sala, and “Football” which is Futbol.

• Luis Figo, Ronaldo, Ronaldinho, Robinho and Roberto Carlos played futsal when they were young. This set their skills apart from other players, making them the world’s best players.

• The difference between futsal and other forms of indoor football is that futsal court has no walls or boards that players can use to bounce the ball from.
