Kick-off gets ball rolling on big-dollar stadium

Friday, November 20, 2009

THE fastest growing sport in Australia will soon have a first-class home in the Far North.

Work has started on a multi-million dollar indoor soccer stadium at Redlynch, creating up to 50 construction jobs and providing a future venue for international events.

The Redlynch Central Sports Stadium, which will be built opposite the Redlynch Central shopping centre, will become home to the Vikings Futsal Australia league once completed in May next year.

Developer Charlie Marino said futsal, or indoor soccer, had been the fastest growing sport in Australia for the past three years.

The 3000sq m venue, built without any cash from local, state or federal governments will include four indoor courts, as well as a 650sq m gymnasium.

"The rise of soccer in Australia's sporting landscape has been nothing short of amazing and we are excited to be playing a role in the future development of futsal in Cairns," Mr Marino said.

The stadium, located on the soon-to-be developed Chelsea Lane, will also include four multi-purpose courts and about 88 car spaces.

Discussions have already started for the venue to host an international futsal tournament between Australia, New Zealand, China, Japan and Thailand later next year.
