Hasted eyes Futsal World Cup

BUDERIM futsal player Sarah Hasted is hoping experience pays off in her tilt for a spot in her second Futsal World Cup team next month.

Hasted will travel to Canberra for the Australian Futsal Championships in January.

A 2008 World Cup representative, she returned recently from China, where she competed against teams from New Zealand, China and the Philippines.

“We came up against some really difficult teams,” Hasted, 20, said.

“But we all tried our best and won all of our games.”

Hasted, a goalkeeper, said the different style of play of overseas teams had been great to see and she had enjoyed the cultural experience.

“It was a fun experience and a real culture shock – it was just really different,” she said.

Hasted has an extra incentive to make the Australian team, with the squad set to tour Brazil as a warm-up for the World Cup.

“I’ve always wanted to go to Brazil,” she said.

“I’ve heard that especially their women’s teams are really good, even their club teams.

“Brazil has some of the best goalkeeper training there is, so it would be good to learn a few things.”

She hoped her previous representative experience would give her an advantage over her opposition, having travelled with multiple Australian and Queensland touring squads.

“We will be pretty tight-knit because we’ve played with each other a fair bit,” she said.

Hasted originally played football but was drawn to futsal because of the scorching pace of the game.

“It’s just a quick game and because I’m a goalkeeper it makes it more interesting,” she said.

“I’m a bit of a hypo person, so it’s good.”

There will be little time to rest for Hasted over the New Year period as she juggles a busy work and training schedule.

The Women’s Futsal World Cup will be held in Argentina in October next year.
