St Peter's do double take as boys and girls sides grab the glory in Meath Futsal finals

Thursday December 03 2009

ST PETER'S College stole the show last week as the Aura Leisure Centre in Trim hosted the Meath finals of the FAI Post-Primary Futsal blitz.

The Dunboyne secondary school scooped an impressive double to claim both the girls and boys titles as eight schools from across the Royal County competed for a place in next month's North Leinster finals.

The achievement capped a momentous week for soccer in the area, after local club and current FAI Aviva Club of the Year Dunboyne AFC had welcomed Brazilian World Cup legend Pele last Thursday.

Consisting of one six-team group -- compared to the boys' two groups of four -- the girls competition was first up and saw 15 exciting group matches take place and at the end of the provisional round of fixtures, Eureka Kells sat on top of the group.

They were followed into the competition final by runners-up, St Peter's College, while Ratoath College finished in third place on goal difference ahead of Beaufort College (Navan). Athboy Community School grabbed fifth place ahead of Beaufort College B team.

The 16th and final game of the competition proved to be as exciting as any before it, with the teams tied 2-2 after normal time. St Peter's College struck the golden goal two minutes into injury time to take the win. The boys blitz proved to be even more exciting as eight teams from six schools competed for the title of Meath Futsal champions.

Group One saw a talented Athboy team top the table and progress to the semi-finals, where they were joined by runners-up, St Peter's College's B team.

Beaufort College from Navan saw their team finish in third place in the group and St Fintina's from Longwood finished in fourth.

St Peter's College A side progressed to the semi-finals as winners of Group Two. Ratoath College finished second and also went through.

Beaufort College B team finished in third and Ashbourne Community College finished fourth, while in the play-offs Ashbourne overcame St Fintina's in the battle for seventh place with a 4-3 victory. Beaufort B beat Beaufort A 2-1 after extra time to grab fifth.

The first semi-final saw Ratoath College take a two-goal lead against Athboy, before being pegged back with the final kick of the game and eventually beaten on the golden goal rule in extra time. It was an all-St Peter's College tie in the second semi-final, where the A team prevailed.

Chances were few and far beaten in the showpiece, before the Dunboyne school took a late lead to seize the initiative in the final stages. As Athboy frantically looked for an equaliser, St Peter's sealed victory with a second goal to complete an impressive boys and girls double in an exciting week for the Dunboyne school.
