A long list of world superstars such as Messi, Ronaldo, Kaka and Ronaldinho acclaim the importance of Futsal in helping to develop their ball skills when they were youngsters. Manchester City’s Brazilian superstar and record signing, Robinho says of the game which helped his skill development:
“I started playing Futsal when I was four years old and most of the moves I use on the pitch come from playing Futsal. Playing Futsal as a young child really helps to develop ball skills.”
Pele, on his recent visit to Ireland had this to add,
"Of course Futsal was important in helping to develop my ball control, quick thinking, passing.... of course you have to have an aptitude for both Futsal and normal football and you must have the capacity to adjust because of the differences in the games. But for dribbling, balance, concentration....Futsal was very very important, no doubt".
The FAI Futsal module will run each Saturday from the 9thth of January to the 30th of January inclusive at the impressive Gormanston College Sports Hall. It can cater for four indoor futsal matches at any one time.
The Futsal fixture dates are as follows:
Saturday 9th January, Saturday 16th January, Saturday 23rd January, Saturday 30th January
The Futsal module is open to all teams competing in the NDSL/Drogheda leagues U7s, U8s and U9s divisions. However, the module will only cater for 20 teams at each age group on a first come, first served basis, so a quick response to competition coordinator, Paul Keogh (details below) is urged from managers of those teams interested. The competition promises to be the ideal preparation for the re opening of the outdoor football season early in February. FAI National Futsal Coordinator, Derek O’Neill said of the move:
“This is a really positive step by our FAI grassroots department with support from the NDSL and the Drogheda league. They are following a move made by other progressive leagues such as the DDSL and ADSL in providing guaranteed weather proof football for children at a time when fixtures are badly affected by inclement weather. I’ve no doubt that it will be a great success and more importantly, that the children will really enjoy playing Futsal and have a chance to express their skills in a great environment.”
