UEFA.comSwitzerland win debut futsal fixturesThursday 17 December 2009Switzerland's newly-created futsal national team won their debut fixtures this week, defeating Malta in two friendlies in Magglingen.
DevelopmentThe Swiss Football Association has been running a futsal department for three years, with 47 clubs now competing in two leagues, including FC Basel 1893 and FC Schaffhausen as well as previous champions Uni Futsal Team Bulle and FC Seefeld Zürich, who have competed in the UEFA Futsal Cup. Now, having already played internationals at Under-21 level, Switzerland made their senior bow on Tuesday and secured a 6-4 win, followed by a 3-2 success against a Malta side coached by experienced Dutch technicial Vic Hermans.
Kovacevic starsSeefeld's Danijel Kovacevic was touted as the man to watch from the 20-man Swiss squad and he lived up to that reputation with two dominating performances. In the first game, Switzerland saw a 4-2 lead wiped out only to score twice in the last four minutes, while the following day it was 1-1 at the break before two Swiss goals set them on the way to victory. The first competitive tournaments Switzerland could enter would be the qualifying competitions for the 2012 UEFA European Futsal Championship and FIFA Futsal World Cup.
