Schools to push futsal setup

Tuesday, December 29, 2009

THE Lautoka Secondary Schools Soccer Association hopes to introduce fustal to its affiliated members next year.

The LSSSA held its first futsal training program for secondary school players at the Lautoka Andhra Sangam School in Field 40 last month.

LSSSA president Aminesh Ram said the next step was to involve teachers in coaching clinics.

He said they hoped to kick off a futsal competition next year.

"Our aim is to raise the level of soccer through futsal," Ram said.

"Futsal is fast paced and requires a lot of skill and endurance. If we can get our students playing more futsal then their skill level will automatically lift. We also plan to get the clubs involved in the abbreviated code."

The first futsal training program conducted by Fiji Football Association development officer James Muir attracted more than 30 students.

Lautoka Football Association president Shalendra Prasad said the futsal development program in the Sugar City was the initiative of the LSSSA.

He said it was good to see the LSSSA join the district association in a bid to lift the profile of soccer.

"LFA is determined to develop all codes of soccer," Prasad said.

"We appointed development officers this year who held many training programs. Now the LSSSA has come up with the futsal plan. We are also focussing on development of women's soccer."

Lautoka won the National Soccer League competition this year. The side was the runner-up in Fiji FACT, Battle of the Giants and Inter District Competition.
