Kilbride: Can't wait for the kick off

Friday, 11 December 2009

Boro's latest captain is eagerly looking forward to the 2010 season, one where Middlesbrough will play as defending champions, and Kilbride can't wait for the big kick off away in Manchester.

Despite losing over 15 years of experience for this season, Jason Kilbride is looking forward to a new look Middlesbrough for 2010 and as the club's most experienced player - he has never missed a national league match - he was awarded the captain's armband, following in the footsteps of England internationals Holmes, Mortlock and Leyshon.

"We have lost some good players, but there's a few waiting in the wings to step up to the mark and take us forward. It will be interesting to see how the team performs, but we've been training since October and we're looking good.

"It might take us some time to reach our potential and the loss of players like Ryon (Leyshon), Matty (Wootton) and Nick (Hamblin) will mean we'll have to look to others for goals, but Robbie (Bettson) has goals in him and as a team we'll all chip in. Damon's brought in some new players and I think he has a team that he's happy with for the long term future of Middlesbrough. We're a young team but there's no pressure on us as we've proved ourself once, now we have to see if this team can reach the levels we've been at, however long it takes.

"I can't wait to play the first game away at Manchester against Nick, I don't think he'll have the affect on us as he did against so many teams last season - we're used to him! We've not beaten them in four attempts in the league, so we'll be going there for the win and to get off to a good start."

Kilbride has some tough acts to follow as captain, but is relishing the chance and has international ambitions himself. "It's an honour to captain Boro, and I hope I can carry on Boro's proud record and go on to play for England. Damon wouldn't have selected me if he didn't think I have the potential so I will work hard for the team and I'm only young so who knows."
