Solomon Star NewsFutsal Teams to Compete as UnderdogsMonday, 11 January 2010The Solomon Islands Futsal Under 15 and 12 teams will go into this weeks FFA National Futsal Championships in Australia as the visiting underdogs from the South Pacific.
Solomon Islands is the only outside team apart from New Zealand to compete in Australia’s most prestigious Futsal competition.
With more than 120 teams vying for the top spot in this years’ tournament, the young boys will be going up against some of the best teams from Australia’s youth circuit.
Currently the defending champions are from the state of New South Wales. The same state where last years Under 15 boys lost to when they reached the semi-finals before bowing out of the competition.
But in spite of last weeks travelling episode where both teams almost had their initial flights cancelled, the two squads are confident of their performance.
Trainer and National Futsal Coach Dickson Kadau said last week before jetting off to Canberra that the two teams are expected to do well.
He said despite the hurdles the team had to go through all throughout their preparation up until their departure, they have maintained a positive approach towards fulfilling their goal, which is to do better in this years competition.
With the Men’s’ national team performance on the world stage lifting the profile of the sport both here in the country and abroad, the young boys will be using this to bolster their teams’ confidence.
Teams in Australia are well aware of the Solomon Islands playing style and threat on the court and with the country’s track record in past tournaments and similar competitions, the young boys will certainly be considered as the underdogs all throughout this week.
