Crewe and Nantwich GuardianNew Year Fitness Kicks Off With FutsalMonday 11th January 2010STUDENTS at Crewe's South Cheshire College are being encouraged to kick off their new year fitness drives by taking part in a different form of football.
Futsal is being driven by the college’s FA Focus College status and the sessions begin on Friday from 12noon to 1pm, in the sports hall at the Dane Bank Avenue campus.
The game is being implemented as part of the college’s 'enrichment programme', which targets students who don’t normally participate in sport from a range of different college courses.
It enables them to try up to 60 different activities in addition to their day-to-day programmes, which range from jewellery making and music to Spanish and sport.
Futsal is a variant of the traditional 11-a-side football and is played indoors on a hard surface but is very different to other forms of indoor football because it uses sidelines, backlines, a smaller ball and taller and narrower goals.
Students who take part in the ten week football sessions every Friday will also be able to put their skills to the test when the college enters a tournament next month.
South Cheshire College was awarded Focus College status by British Colleges Sport and the Football Association in November last year.
Martyn Kiel, further education sports co-ordinator, said: “Futsal is a really interesting version of indoor football and we are confident it will catch on with students across the college.
“Although it’s different to other forms of football it is a fun game and will certainly help students from different courses across the college step up their fitness levels.”
