Italian to replace sacked coach

The Viet Nam Football Federation has sacked Piemkum Pattaya of Thailand and named Italian Sergio Gargelli as the new coach of the national futsal team.

The decision to dismiss Pattaya was taken after Viet Nam failed to get through the stage group in the futsal competition at the third Asian Indoor Games last November in HCM City.

The Thai coach had a successful spell earlier, helping Viet Nam finish second at the ASEAN Football Federation Futsal Championships last June, beating Indonesia in the semi-finals.

Gargelli, who comes from a country that is strong in futsal, is a young coach. He has previous coaching experience in Japan, but has never coached a national futsal team.

"My current contract with VFF is only for two months. Whether the contract will be renewed or not will depend on the results in the Asian Football Confederation Futsal Championships Southeast Asian Zone Qualifiers in Indonesia next month," the Italian said.

He did not reveal how much the VFF will pay him for the first two months.


"If Viet Nam qualifies for the finals, I will continue working with VFF. Otherwise, my contract will be terminated."

Gargelli said he was not very happy with existing facilities, which are located in a warehouse and lacks sufficient lighting, but added, "we would have to deal with it."

The Asean Zone qualifiers for the AFC Futsal Championship 2010 will take place from February 20-25 at the Jakarta Tennis Indoor Stadium in Indonesia.

Eight teams from ASEAN are divided into two groups. Viet Nam is in Group B along with Malaysia, Cambodia, and the Philippines.

Teams in both groups will compete in a round robin format with the two top teams going through to the semifinals.

Semifinal winners and the winner of the third place match will qualify for the finals.

Viet Nam will play their first match on February 20 against Cambodia, followed by matches against the Philippines and Malaysia.

Il 35enne allenatore italiano è il nuovo tecnico della nazionale vietnamita per le qualificazioni alla Coppa d'Asia. "Se non passo, il mio contratto decade"

HANOI - Si continua a puntare sugli allenatori di scuola italiana, anche se il nome del nuovo profeta del nostro calcio all'estero dirà ben poco ai più: Sergio Gargelli, 35 anni, sbarca in Vietnam. La Federcalcio Vietnamita ha scelto lui per risollevare le sorti della nazionale di calcio a 5, dopo i pessimi risultati raggiunti dal suo predecessore Piemkum Pattaya nelle qualificazioni agli Asian Indoor Games, tenutisi lo scorso novembre a Ho Chi Minh City.

TECNICO GIA' AFFERMATO - "Gargelli è un allenatore giovane proveniente da un Paese con forti tradizioni calcistiche con esperienze anche in Giappone", si legge nel comunicato di presentazione emesso dalla Federazione del Vietnam. In effetti il coach di casa nostra ha già ottenuto ottimi risultati non solo in casa nostra ma anche nel paese del Sol Levante, dove ha allenato una delle principali squadre di club nipponiche, il Tokyo Fuchu Athletic.

FIDUCIA A TERMINE - Gargelli è stato chiamato per guidare la nazionale vietnamita nel cammino di qualificazione per l"Asian Football Confederation Futsal Championships' . "Il mio attuale contratto - spiega ai media il neo-CT - ha la durata di due mesi. Se il Vietnam si qualificherà per la fase finale, continuerò a lavorare per la Federazione; altrimenti l'accordo decadrà automaticamente". Per il tecnico italiano la priorità è lavorare sulle strutture di allenamento e di gioco, base per il raggiungimento di risultati positivi.

ESORDIO CON LA CAMBOGIA - Il destino dell'allenatore italiano si deciderà quindi in Indonesia: le qualificazioni per la Coppa d'Asia di calcio a 5, infatti, si svolgeranno dal 20 febbraio presso lo stadio del tennis di Giakarta. L'esordio sarà contro la Cambogia, in un girone che prevede anche Malesia e Filippine.
