The TennesseanMt. Juliet parks department increases optionsBy
Deborah HighlandJanuary 13, 2010A new expansion at the Mt. Juliet Community Center in Charlie Daniels Park has opened up more space, which means that the parks department has the needed square footage to add more programs.
This month the department is adding futsal, a Brazilian style of soccer that is played indoors on a basketball court.
"There's really no place around here you can play except for Franklin," athletics director Tim Henson said.
"We didn't want to do indoor soccer because of the balls bouncing off of the walls," he said.
Futsal is a more attractive option because the sport is played on a basketball court and any ball that would be out of bounds in basketball is out of bounds in futsal. Futsal balls are also smaller and softer than regular soccer balls.
"Here in the last year we've really tried to reach out in the community," Henson said. "We want to offer as many things as possible. Lots of people love playing soccer, and this is something for them to do in the wintertime to get out of the cold and get going."
Futsal games will be played on Thursday nights. The city currently is holding sign-ups. The entry fee for teams is $350.
In addition to futsal, the parks department also plans to offer fall outdoor soccer this year.
