Wiltshire Times Chippenham off to a flyerThursday 14th January 2010FORMER Corsham Town ace Jamie Lyons scored Chippenham’s historic first goal in the FA National League as the Wiltshire side celebrated their opening Midlands Division match with a 9-7 win at Birmingham Tigers.
Chippenham started the brighter of the two teams and, after two minutes, from an incisive break by Frome Town’s Luke Ballinger, the ball was squared for Lyons to score.
The visitors continued to control the game, restricting their opponents to long range efforts before Lyons scored again.
Another goal followed soon after, when a trademark breakaway from Ballinger saw him fire low into the corner of the net.
Tigers hit back and almost scored again when England international Pete Vallance’s shot rebounded off the post.
From the resulting kick-in, Chippenham captain Gary Banks finished off a flowing move.
Lyons then completed his first-half hat-trick by capitalising on a defensive mistake.
Trailing 5-1, Tigers attacked from the start of the second half and scored two goals in quick succession.
Goals from Lyons and Jonas Martins stretched Chippenham clear again but a Tigers’ fightback, stalled only by Lyons’ fifth of the game, made it 8-7 with just 70 seconds remaining.
However, the points and a first-ever league win for Chippenham was secured when Ballinger deftly chipped the ball forward for Danny Baker to glance past the oncoming keeper.
