Thais get chance to avenge futsal defeat

Wednesday, 20 January 2010

KUALA LUMPUR: Thailand will have a chance to avenge their 2008 AFC Futsal Championship final loss to Iran when the two square up in April in a four-nation invitational futsal tournament in Thailand.

Iran, who defeated hosts Thailand 4-0 in the 2008 final, will be looking to bag their 10th continental crown in Tashkent from May 23 to 30.

The four-nation tournament will be played in Centara Hotel in the northeastern city of Udonthani from April 1 to 5.

A Football Association of Thailand (FAT) official confirmed the participation of Iran and Portugal apart from the hosts.

“We have received the confirmation of Iran and Portugal(*). We are currently negotiating with Holland, Croatia and Czech Republic and hope any one of these teams will complete the line-up,” he said.

Head of Iran Football Association’s futsal department, Abbas Torabian said that his association has requested their Thai counterparts to postpone the tournament by a week as the present dates clash with Iranian New Year – Norouz - holidays.

“We will definitely participate in this tournament because this will be our last friendly game before we fly to Uzbekistan,” Torabian said.
