FAI Futsal PortalFAI Futsal Cup FixturesTuesday, 19 January 2010The final draft of fixtures for the 2010 FAI Futsal Cup competition has been released today with the first games kicking off on January 30th.
The competition is in its fourth year and fixtures will take place in four venues countrywide with Galway also staging matches for the first time. Four top class facilities will be used again this year and will provide a suitable stage for players to showcase their skills.
The venues are:
Leinster: BRL Umbro Arena, Ballymun, Dublin.
Ulster: AURA Leisure Centre, Letterkenny, Co. Donegal.
Connaught: Kingfisher Centre, NUI Galway.
Munster: University of Limerick.
The fixtures have thrown up some interesting pairings with former champions Shamrock Rovers and St. Pat’s Athletic meeting in Leinster Group 1. Last Year’s Champions, Cork City play Limerick and will hope to reproduce the form which took them all the way to the UEFA Futsal Cup last season.
Futsal clubs from the recently formed Emerald Futsal League have also been included in the competition for the first time with Alpha Futsal, Dublin Santos and Blue Magic playing alongside the newly formed Futsal teams aligned to established clubs such as Rovers, Pats, Sporting Fingal and Bray.
The introduction of junior clubs and selection teams has been an interesting addition to this year’s competition which sees a record entry of 32 teams. The first round fixtures will see the Junior clubs and League of Ireland / Futsal clubs kept apart until the last 16 round on February 27th.
The finals weekend on 6/7 March will see the final 8 teams battle it out for a place in the 2010/11 UEFA Futsal Cup preliminary rounds which will take place in July.
FAI National Futsal Coordinator, Derek O’Neill said:
“It promises to be an interesting competition with the introduction of the juniors. Many of the current National Futsal team play in the junior leagues and I’m looking forward to some new talent emerging around the country. There are some great 5 a side players in the Junior game out there and there are some exciting opportunities available to players who excel at the game. I’m hoping that some of the players in this year’s competition will help broaden the base of players available for selection for next year’s FIFA Futsal World Cup Qualifiers.” More on the fixtures:
