National Futsal Squad trials on for Honiara

Tuesday, 02 February 2010

The Solomon Islands National Futsal Team, Kurukuru, have been called by the team management to restart training in preparation for the 2010 season. Assistant National Futsal Team Coach, Jerry Sam, confirmed to the SIFF Media Office today that the team had its first training session this afternoon. Sam explained that they are also running trials during the training to identify potential candidates for the new national select side.

The trials and training sessions are held at the Honiara City Council Multipurpose Hall in Honiara on Mondays, Wednesday and Fridays and will be conducted throughout this month. Futsal Head Coach, Dickson Kadau, and his assistant, Jerry Sam, are supervising the trials and the training.

Ten additional players have been recruited from the Honiara Futsal League to try out for the national team.

According to the duo they will be able to release the final training squad by the 1st of March. ‘We will then maintain the team with regular training and trial matches in preparation for any international matches this year,’ Jerry Sam said.

Kurukuru is the champion of Oceania Football Confederation winning the regional championship 2 years in a row in 2008 and 2009. The Oceania champions won the 2009 competition with an 8 – 1 victory over Fiji. Kurukuru also had convincing wins in the preliminary rounds coming out on top against New Caledonia (8 – 3), Fiji (5 – 3) and Vanuatu (11 – 0).

Kurukuru also participated in the Alfateh Intercontinental Futsal Championship held in Libya in October of last year. Elliot Ragomo was the star of that tournament winning the golden boot award ahead of Iranian goal scoring maestro Vahid Shamsaee. Vahid Shamsaee holds the world record for total number of Futsal goals.

According to the Solomon Islands Football Federation 2010 Calendar of Events Kurukuru will take part in the OFC Futsal Championship which will be held in Fiji in July.

The National Futsal Championship, scheduled for March, will also provide national selectors with the opportunity to identify additional talent from the provinces. Futsal is slowly gaining ground in the provinces with championships starting to pop up especially in Malaita and the Central Islands.
