Fiji FA Official web Site Futsal Trials beginAround 25 players turned up for the National Futsal trials which began at the Tattersall Leisure Center in Suva this morning.
Top district reps with the likes of Kamal Hassan (Lautoka), Arvindra Naidu (Lautoka), Alvin Avinesh (Lautoka), Uraia Loki ( Nadi), Benaminio Mateinqara (Navua), Siga Ali (Navua), Aisea Codro (Ba) and Dinesh Mudaliar (Suva) were present.
The trials are in preparation for the 2010 Oceania Football Confederation Futsal Championship and the 2011 Futsal World Championship qualifiers.
Former Australian national Futsal rep and coach Scott Gilligan is working closely with the Fiji FA Technical Department in selecting a strong side for these championships.
Fiji Futsal Commission is determined to win the OFC Futsal Championship and later qualify for the World Championship.
Speaking to Fiji FA Media Gilligan says a lot of hard work was needed in order for Fiji to achieve their goal. He says lacking futsal competition may be a major contributing factor.
“I’m not happy because of the fact that players do not play Futsal here but I think there is some potential,” he said.
Gilligan added that around 14 players will be named in the training squad following the trails.
“There are about six players (at the trials) which I want but I won’t say I was overwhelmed. I have about six now I will be looking at 14 but will have to see if the technical department is comfortable.
“Players need to work extremely hard in Futsal,” Gilligan said.
He plans to work on basic skills and upgrading knowledge of the abbreviated code in the next few days.
The three day trials conclude on Friday.
