Marty SheveloveVICTORIAN’S Under 12 girls’ team had a fantastic run during the recent Australian National Futsal Championships in Canberra, reaching the grand final where it fell 4-0 to an accomplished NSW team.
It was the first time in the 31-year history of the tournament that a Victorian U12 team reached the final.
The Vics defeated the ACT Cobras in the semi-final. The final was played in the AIS’s main arena.
Madeline Stockdale of the Brighton Thunderbirds was the Vics leading goal scorer, kicking five of the team’s 14 goals during its seven games.
Lucy Kennedy of the Sandringham Soccer Club was also on the side along with Gabriella Fox (Keilor), Sarina Vallese (Green Gully), Danniella Galluccio (Box Hill), Zoe Stamatopolous (Epping), Rosemaree Scarpino (Brunswick Zebras), Alicia Vakalopoulos (Richmond), Chloe Cini (Sydenham) and goalkeeper Emma Heckenberg (Monash Soccer Club).
The team was coached by South Melbourne’s Sam Mlynarz. Derek Smith, of Keilor and the Australian Futsal Group, served as team manager
Heckenberg played a vital role in goal and also kicked several goals herself during the series. Defenders Vallese, Fox and the cool, calm and experienced Kennedy stopped many opposition attacks on goal
Midfielders Stamatopolous, Gallucio and Vakalopoulos set up many opportunities up front with direct and accurate passing.
Strikers Stockdale, Cini and Scarpino all scored amazing goals under pressure.
