Indoor Futsal keeping Pickering Soccer Club players busy in winter

PICKERING -- The Pickering Soccer Club is keeping its members busy over the winter with an indoor futsal program.

Game designed to focus on skill development

PICKERING -- The Pickering Soccer Club continues, throughout the winter months, to provide recreational soccer development to the Pickering community through its indoor futsal program.

The program is based on the traditional rules of futsal, which is played throughout the world, and is considered the best soccer skills development program for players. Played on a gym hardwood floor, the program is structured so that players thrive in a fast-paced, non-contact game.

In addition, the ball is slightly heavier which eliminates long passes, forcing play that is more dynamic with multiple passes over shorter distances. The heavier ball also means that it is on the ground longer so the challenge is for the player to get "open" as often as possible, testing their tactical and physical ability.

At the same time, the small playing field presents opportunities for players to have more touches to the ball.

"The growth of futsal in Ontario is becoming more apparent as the leagues across Ontario have evolved," stated Pickering Soccer Club head coach Tony La Ferrara in a press release. "The club has run an indoor futsal program for the last three years and has provided a forum for Pickering players to test themselves and develop their technical abilities and fitness."

The sport is quickly gaining a reputation as a great skill developer, demanding quick reflexes, fast thinking and pinpoint passing and has proven to be suitable for kids and adults.
