Wednesday, 10 February 2010

The AUL select progressed to the second round of the FAI Futsal Cup with a clean sweep of victories in Leinster Section Two on Saturday. Jonathan Tormey’s side included futsal international Tony Kane in their ranks and their experience told on the day.

The AUL also featured a number of players with previous futsal experience including Alan McCabe, Jamie Gilbert, Thomas Cullen and Stephen Coleman.

McCabe, Gilbert and Ger Jordan bagged the AUL goals in a 3-1 win over Duleek United first time out.

FAS South took the runners-up position and will also progress to the last 16 and they began with a 3-1 win over Whitehall Celtic with Dwayne Kelly, Carl Kinnear and Kevin Quinn finding the net.

The battle between the AUL and FAS South ultimately decided who topped the group and it was the AUL who ran out 6-4 winners.

Former Preston midfielder Mikey Keane bagged two for the AUL with a Darren Hennessy brace and goals from Kane and McCabe giving the AUL the edge. Conor Branagan hit two, Brendan Turley and Dwayne Kelly responded for FAS South.

The AUL beat Whitehall Celtic 6-1 in their final fixture with McCabe, Kane, Jordan, Mark Behan and Stephen Murphy brace to secure top spot and a meeting with the Connacht Group One runners-up.

FAS South beat Duleek United 2-0 in their last game to claim the runners-up spot. Quinn and Abiola Sanassi grabbed the goals. They’ll meet the Connacht Group One winners in the second round.

With a place in the UEFA Futsal Cup available to the winners of the domestic tournament, the competition is starting to heat up.
