National Futsal Squad May Make It To Tashkent Games

PETALING JAYA, Feb 15 (Bernama) -- The country's futsal team, which is mainly made up of young players, is expected to do well in the qualifiying round in the Asian Football Confederation (AFC) Indonesia Futsal Championship that starts this Saturday and therefore qualify for the finals in Tashkent, Uzbekistan this May.

Team manager Datuk Hamidin Mohd Amin said he had confidence in his team.

"They have promised 100 per cent committment," he told reporters at Wisma FAM in Kelana Jaya here Monday.

In the qualifying round for the Asean Zone at the Indoor Tennis Stadium in Jakarta, over Feb 20-25, seven countries were divided into two groups, which were Group A featuring Australia, Indonesia and Myanmar; and Group B featuring - Malaysia, Vietnam, Cambodia and the Philippines .

Meanwhile, the head coach of the national futsal squad, Maizal Hairi Marzuki, said being in Group B Malaysia faced a strong challenge from Vietnam.

He expected that if Malaysia made it to the semi-finals the team would be up against either Indonesia or Myanmar, adding that the team had previously defeated both these teams.

In the AFC Futsal qualifiers, Malaysia is up against the Philippines on Feb 20 Feb, Cambodia (Feb 21) and Vietnam (Feb 22).

The semi-finals and the finals will be held on Feb 24 and Feb 25 respectively
