Rising soccer star Jordan Koton was selected for the NSW Thunder under-11 Futsal team only in October last year but the North Bondi athlete has already claimed his first national championship.

“It was amazing. I felt like I’ve been getting better and better over the years but last year I just excelled,” Jordan said.

The championships were held in Canberra with an opening ceremony at the Australian Institute of Sport to welcome teams from Australia, New Zealand and the Solomon Islands.

Jordan helped his team achieve an 8-0 victory in the final against NSW Lightning, scoring two goals and “created several chances with his quick feet, dangerous running and speedy counterattacks”, according to the Football NSW match report.

“The final was definitely no walkover. They were a very strong team but ours was really good and our coach was really good, so we just overpowered them,” he said. “It’s a very quick game, so you’ve got to get very fired up but if you run too fast or turn too fast you can buckle your knee.”

Jordan signed up for his first soccer season seven years ago, but currently plays for Football Mundial, Premier Division Futsal for the Mascot Vipers and is training five times a week with the Football NSW Project 22 elite training program.

Project 22 is a system aimed specifically at producing future Socceroos and Matildas to compete at the 2022 FIFA World Cup.

“I like outdoor soccer more than indoor but the skills are basically the same, so it’s good to play both,” he said.

Jordan said he was determined to see his soccer career through to his dream of one day playing for Arsenal in the English Premier League.
