Shamrock Rovers Official Web SiteRovers in futsal quarter finalsTuesday, 02 March 2010Rovers will be bidding for futsal glory this weekend when the Hoops take place in the last eight of the FAI Futsal Cup. With a place in the UEFA Futsal Cup open to the winners, it's all to play for as the competition hits the quarter-final stage.
Rovers will meet Bray/St Joseph's in a repeat of last year's epic Emerald Futsal League (Leinster) final. The kick-off is 1.30pm at the BRL Umbro Arena at Trinity Comprehensive, Ballymun. All Hoops fans are encouraged to come along.
The winners of that game will meet the winners of Sporting Final/EID v AUL game. The Hoops were clearly drawn in the tougher half of the draw so if they could repeat their national success of 2007 this year it would be a tremendous achievement.
Rovers won 7-1 in their last 16 clash with the Ulster Senior League select in Gormanston College last Saturday.
Moroccan wizard Badr Bouznig put the Hoops ahead after just 20 seconds but it was the second half before another goal went in, with Ian Byrne squaring for Brendan Dawson to knock home.
That set up a stunning blitz from the Hoops that finished with Byrne grabbing two, Bouznig and Dawson each nicking another and Braulio Rangel also scoring before Laurence Toland replied for Ulster.
"It was an excellent performance, particularly in the second half when we took a grip of the match," said manager Stephen Finn.
"This weekend is going to be extremely challenging as the winners of each of the quarter-finals will progress to the semi-finals and final the next day.
"I'd really love the chance to represent Rovers in Europe as the squad deserves that opportunity to play on a higher stage after all the effort they've put in over the past 12 months."
