Solomon Star NewsJack, Elliot Flying high in IranFriday, 05 March 2010Two Solomon Islands national Futsal players Jack Wetney and Elliot Ragomo are in Iran for the Asian futsal club (AFC) championship.
They are currently on a journey of a life time after flying out with the New South Wales (NSW) Thunders of Australia to Esfahan, Iran early this week.
NSW Thunders official Damian Briggs told Star Sports that both Elliot and Jack are extremely excited and have been training the house down as Thunder prepare for its opening encounter with Wuhan Dilong of China at Pirouzi Stadium last night.
Both of the local players said they are excited and looking forward for the competition.
"We have a good team and I can't wait for the competition to begin," said Ragomo after training on Wednesday night.
" I'm looking forward for the competition as the best teams are here and I know some of the other players".
When asked if NSW thunder could make the second round he said, "it will be tough but I think we can, we have been working hard at training and I think we got a good chance".
Jack Wetney has also been training well and like Ragomo he is also looking forward to the tournament.
"I can't wait for it to start, the team is great we have a lot of good players in our team and I think we can go well", he said.
When asked what he thought of Iran, both Ragomo and Wetney said, "its an amazing place, so nice and people are friendly".
NSW Thunder took on Wuhan Dilong of China at Pirouzi Stadium last night at 9.30 pm local time (2pm Iran Time).
Result was not available as this edition went to press last night.
The tournament will end next week.
There are 10 teams taking part and are divided into two groups of five.
The top two in each group will advance to the semi-finals.
Group A comprises Foolad Mahan Sepahah, of Iran, Japan's Nagoya Oceans, Uzbeks Stroitel Zarafshan, and AUB Altyn Tash Bishkek, of Kyrgyzstan and Iraq side Nawrouz.
In Group B, the clubs are: Port Authority, of Thailand, China's Wuhan Dilong, and New South Wales Thunder, of Australia, Lebanon's Pro's Cafè and Al Sadd, of Qatar.
