Sun DailyRevive-Sports Planet futsal tournamentTHE Revive-Sports Planet Ultimate Champions League futsal tournament is back.
Returning for a third time, the three-nation tournament now has additional categories for under-17 male futsal enthusiasts.
"With the new categories, we hope to unearth talent at the grassroots, and hopefully these youngsters can go on to make their name in the game on a bigger stage," Sports Planet executive director Wong Horr Wai said.
He said a new venue at Kota Damansara, which is slated to open in May, will be part of this year’s event.
Speaking at the official launch of the tournament, Wong said the first leg of the league will be held at Sports Planet Shah Alam on Sunday.
This year’s tournament will feature 16 legs.
Knockout stages for the Men’s Open will take place at Sports Planet venues throughout Peninsular Malaysia until Aug 7. The tournament will then move to venues in East Malaysia, Singapore and Indonesia.
Two teams from the Men’s Open category will advance from each of the 16 legs to the Oct 9 grand finals at Sports Planet Ampang.
The tournament’s organisers Sports Planet and Permanis Sandilands – brand owner of Revive Isotonic – expect another 32 teams from each of the Women’s Open and Under-17 categories to take part at the grand finals, totalling 96 teams.
The tournament, which offers RM60,000 in total prize money, will also reward winners of the knockout stages.
At each leg, the top three teams will bag RM1,500, RM800 and RM300 respectively, while grand final champions stand to win RM7,000, with prizes also for second to fourth places.
Sports Planet and Revive will also host two side events during the finals – the Media Cup and the Supporters Club Cup.
The supporters event this year has teams divided by country (not football clubs as in past editions) in celebration of the Fifa World Cup.
Each team can register between five and eight players for a fee of RM150 per team at any Sports Planet outlet in Malaysia.
Registration will close a day before each knockout stage when the draws are announced.
