Tutong team take futsal crown

THE Tutong District Religious Office beat the Department of Mosque Affairs B 3-2 on penalties to clinch the first Ministry of Religious Affairs Futsal Tournament trophy yesterday.

The score at the end of regular time in the final of the one-day competition at the Multipurpose Hall of the Hassanal Bolkiah National Sports Complex was 0-0.

The Islamic Propagation Centre A finished third in the 19-team tournament, though the result of their match against the Belait District Religious Office was not available.

The Tutong District Religious Office advanced to the championship match after beating their counterparts from Belait 4-3 on penalties after their semi-final ended 1-1.

The second semi-final saw the Department of Mosque Affairs B beat the Islamic Propagation Centre A 2-0.

Organised by the Administration Department of the Ministry of Religious Affairs, the tournament is set to be an annual affair.

In a Press release issued yesterday, the ministry stated that among the tournament's objectives were to encourage the ministry's employees to be actively involved in sports as well as maintain both their physical and mental health.

It was also hoped that the event would help identify talented players to represent the ministry in inter-ministry tournaments and invitational competitions overseas.

The challenge trophy was donated by the ministry's permanent secretary, Hji Mohd Mahdi Pehin Orang Kaya Digadong Seri Diraja Dato Laila Utama Haji Abd Rahman.
