Bundabergs futsal stars lead

31st March 2010

BUNDABERG’S rising futsal stars are tipped to lead the Wide Bay Pirates to a first-ever regional championship this weekend.

With the Pirates yet to post a win in the competition’s 20-year history, coach Troy Appleton has backed his U10 squad as potential drought-breakers.

The squad will battle it out with teams from northern New South Wales and southern and central Queensland during the blockbuster four-day tournament.

Appleton has tipped the squad’s six budding stars to leave a lasting impression at the competition.

“For such a young side they play an extremely strategic and technical game and they’ve got the speed and the skill to match it,” he said.

“They can go up against larger and older kids and still come out on top.”

The team will play three 40-minute games a day with a match-up against a fierce Central Queensland outfit in the first round of the competition.

“They will be up against the best players in the state, but they’re ready for it,” Appleton said.

“The guys have worked hard to get to this point and they’re going to be hungry to prove they’ve got what it takes.”

The Bundaberg players playing futsal to stay fit and keep their skills sharp in the soccer off-season.

“They’ve learnt to translate those basic soccer skills to the futsal court.

“There’s a bit more stepping and passing than in soccer but they’ve fit into their roles easily,” Appleton said.
