VOV NewsViet Nam defeat Myanmar for champsHCM CITY — Viet Nam's futsal (indoor football) team and favourites thrashed Myanmar 8-1 in the opener at the ASEAN Football Federation (AFF) Futsal Championships to temporarily lead the round robin tournament.
Truong Quoc Tuan and Ha Bao Minh's double and a goal each from Nguyen Hoang Giang, Nguyen Trong Thien, and Ngo Anh Dung gave Viet Nam a perfect start on its journey to secure its first AFF Futsal title, which it missed out on last year.
Last year's runners-up had a slow start, allowing Myanmar to control the match and with only four minutes gone, Htein Lin tapped in the opener for Myanmar from a Han Naing Soe cross from the right flank in a quick attack.
The goal boosted Myanmar's confidence, and they continued to threaten the home team at times with a direct long ball game.
Tuan levelled the score in the 13th minute, tapping in from a spilled Pham Minh Giang shot and only one minute later, Hoang Giang put Viet Nam in front after being set up by Dung.
Two successive goals badly dented Myanmar's spirit and with just over a minute from the break, Thien extended the lead to 3-1 when he capitalised on an error by Myanmar goalkeeper and Captain Han Min Htut, who fumbled a free kick from Vietnamese team captain Nguyen Bao Quan.
Tuan converted his second in the 24th minute, again from a Htut mistake, when the out of sorts Myanmar goalkeeper Htut failed to hold onto the shot, watching it agonisingly roll over his goal-line, with Viet Nam taking a 4-1 lead.
In the remaining ten minutes, Minh scored a brace, while Bao and Dung scored one each to complete the demolition.
In the previous match, possible contenders Malaysia overcame the Philippines 5-3 to take second spot on in the table. Viet Nam will today take on the Philippines while another favourite Indonesia meets Myanmar.
The annual tournament kicked off yesterday with the participation of five countries in the region - Indonesia, Malaysia, Myanmar, the Philippines and host nation Viet Nam; defending champions Thailand are not competing. — VNS
