Iran edge Uzbeks in Thailand tournament

Friday, 09 April 2010

Udon Thani: Asian futsal superpower Iran made a winning start to the four-team Thailand 5s tournament on Thursday when they edged 2010 AFC Futsal Championship hosts Uzbekistan 2-1.

The reigning Asian champions, who travelled to Thailand without star player Vahid Shamsaee, the MVP and top scorer as Foolad Mahan Sepahan won the inaugural AFC Futsal Club Championship, took an early lead at the Centara Hotel Convention Centre with Mohammad Keshavarz opening the scoring in the third minute.

Masoud Daeshvar extended Iran’s lead six minutes later and after Artur Yunusov reduced the deficit with four minutes of the first-half left to play the defences held sway in the second period as neither side could add to the score-line.

In the tournament opener, Argentina proved too strong for hosts Thailand with the South Americans running out 4-1 winners.

A fifth minute strike from Ignacio Caviglia gave the Argentines a 1-0 lead at the interval, which they extended two minutes into the second period with Esteban Arellano scoring the second.

Goalkeeper Guido Mosenson made it 3-0 in the 26th minute and while Akkapol Klomkliang reduced the deficit with three minutes left to play, Pablo Belsito restored Argentina’s three-goal cushion in the 39th minute, sixty seconds after Thailand’s Ekapong Suratsawang had been sent off.
