Iran edge Thailand as Argentina upset

10/04/2010

Thailand lost 4-3 to Iran in their second match of the Thailand 5s futsal tournament at Centara Hotel and Resort in Udon Thani yesterday.

Powerhouses Iran were without their superstar Vahid Shamsaee who has been in conflict with their head coach but they were still better than Thailand.

Thailand stunned Iran after just three minutes when Supawut Theuklang hit the ball home from close range.

Mohammad Taheri equalised for Iran only moments later but Sermphan Khumthinkaew gave Thailand a 2-1 lead in the fifth minute.

The Iranians put the match back on level terms with a strike by Masoud Daneshvar in the 12th minute as the score was 2-2 at half-time.

Two minutes after the restart, Iran went ahead when Thai player Lertchai Issarasuwipakorn sent the ball into his own net.

Daneshvar was on target again as he gave Iran a 4-2 lead and Thanakorn Santanaprasit cut the deficit to 4-3. It was Thailand's second defeat in as many games in the four-team round-robin tournament. The Thais lost 4-1 to Argentina in their opening match.

Thailand manager Adisak Benjasiriwan said his team should have got at least one point had Iran goal-keeper Mostafa Nazari not been in top form.

In yesterday's other match, Uzbekistan beat Argentina 5-2.
