Woodend futsal player aims big

AS the undisputed king of the sport, Brazil represents the perfect place for a young futsal player to hone their craft.

For Woodend goalkeeper Desiree Keating, it also signifies the beginning of the climb to reach her dreams.

Sixteen-year-old Keating will head to futsal’s spiritual home in November as part of Vikings Futsal’s national girls youth team.

The 19-day Centre of Excellence tour will give the players a taste of Brazil’s unmistakable football flair and slick samba style, while working with a range of the country’s top coaches and players.

“It’s a development and training thing,” Keating said.

Keating’s selection for the tour came after she helped the Queensland City under-15 girls team win the national crown at Vikings’ national titles in Sydney in January.

“I’ve played at the nationals three times and I’ve played for Australia once in New Zealand in 2007.

“I was happy with how I played (in Sydney) but made a couple of mistakes, which I thought would let me down.”

She need not have worried, with the Ipswich State High School student, who took up the sport just four years ago, now setting her sights on the sport’s biggest showpiece.

“I’m hoping to play in the World Cup one day. That’s something I really want to do. I just have to complete school, work hard, and hope.”
