Friday 16th April 2010

Hereford’S Futsal fans saw England cruelly denied in their bid to win a first-ever tournament title.

More than 400 people converged on thePoint4 over two days to watch England beaten in the FA Nations International Futsal Tournament.

England thrashed Malta 5-0 in their first match but lost 4-3 in the final to Turkey after conceding a goal in the last three seconds.

Finland beat Malta 3-0 in the thirdplace play-off match, while Turkey overcame Finland, 3-2, in the other game in the tournament.

“There was seating for 500 people and we had around 400 people there each evening,” said HFA spokeswoman Alexis Lunn-Gadd.

“The Futsal was of a very high standard and it should help to raise the profile of the sport in Hereford,” she said.

Futsal is played between two teams of five players on a hard-court surface.

There were also development matches involving young people from Herefordshire.

Under-14 girls: Bishop’s School beat Weobley High School; Under-16 girls: Bishop’s School beat Aylestone.

Under-12 boys: Bartestree beat Pegasus Juniors; Under-10 boys: Hinton beat Bromsgrove Futsal Club.
