BHS GIRLS PERFORM WELL AT LOCAL FUTSAL TOURNAMENT

11 May, 2010

The zone Futsal Tournament was held at Sportz Central on Tuesday, 4/5/10. The girls were entered in two divisions - the 16 years and 19 years.

The 19 years girls job was made difficult by the withdrawal of two players just prior to the tournament. This meant that Kimmi Williams was called in the last minute to goal keep. It also meant that many of the 16 years players had to play up in the older division. Their job was made even more difficult when one of their players was struck down by a migraine. Despite all this the girls played strongly as a team finishing undefeated in their preliminary rounds scoring 47 for and only 6 against in 5 preliminary games. This put them in the final against Christian Community who they had defeated 5-2 earlier in the day. Unfortunately, after scoring all those goals in the earlier games the ball just seemed to kept missing while CCS managed to get two in.

The girls continued to make opportunities and finally Kanisha Phillips-Cooke made the score 2-1. CCS scored again and the girls came back quickly with Ruby Campbell scoring to make it 2-3 and game on. The toll of all the preliminary games seemed to catch up and with a few heavy spills the girls lost their edge allowing an own goal to seal their fate. As the top two teams go through to the Regional Titles in August the BHS girls will look forward to reversing the final result when they meet CCS again.

The 16 years team also went through their preliminary games successfully scoring 27 goals for and 10 against. This put them in the final against BDC. This turned out to be a much harder contest than anticipated as the BDC players were quite physical and never gave in.

Kanisha Phillips-Cooke was dynamite in this game and scored 4 goals in the first half and BDC scored two. The BHS 16 girls showed that they too, like the 19s could play a solid passing game and were unlucky not to score more. The second half saw a fifth goal to Kanisha and one more to BDC to make the final score 5-3 with deserving winners BHS!

Special mention must go to two young girls that played in this team.

Jessica Marks and Jemara Imrie shared the goal keeping duties with class and also displayed superior ability on the court despite their young ages. Jess is just 13 and Jemara 14 so these two definitely have a big future.
