Title hopes alive for Sheffield

20 May 2010

Table-topping Sheffield FC Futsal kept their national play-off and title hopes very much alive with a 4-2 victory at Middlesbrough.
The visitors hit the woodwork four times during the first half but found themselves trailing to a 12th minute strike.
Sheffield were finally rewarded in the 22 minute via a deflected shot from Joan Agusti and, shortly after, a two-goals-in-two-minutes flurry put them in control. The first came from Mark England-Woodcock followed by an effort from Frazer Thomas but the home side ensured a thrilling finale when Robert Bettson bagged his second goal. Richard Ward settled the nerves with a match-clinching fourth goal.
The win over the fourth-placed side saw joint leaders Sheffield and Manchester (who thumped Grimsby 11-0) open up a five point gap over Tranmere Victoria at the top of the FA National Futsal League Northern level with three games to go.
Sheffield face Grimsby at Hillsborough Leisure Centre on Sunday (3.25pm start) - entry is free - but the big test comes on June 6 at Concord Leisure Centre when they meet Manchester in what is likely to be a championship decider.
