2010 Junior Sports Star: Futsal’s rising star

by Hannah Parkes

Football NSW Futsal under-12 goalkeeper of the year Jessica Urquhart
JUST one year after taking up futsal, Croydon Park’s Jessica Urquhart has already collected a heady number of accolades.

Earlier this year, the 13-year-old was named Football NSW Futsal under-12 goalkeeper of the year and picked up the players’ player award in her club team, the Enfield Rovers.

She also represented NSW in the futsal nationals in Canberra where she helped her team win the under-12 grand final.

On top of being an outstanding goalie, she managed to score a goal, from the other side of the court.

“I just kicked it in from the sidelines and it went right through the goalie’s legs.”

On top of all this, Jessica still plays soccer for the Apia Tigers under-14 team, a sport she picked up at age five.

When it was suggested she take up futsal, she said she was intrigued.

“I wanted to give it a try because it was a bit different,” she said.

“You have to have a lot of speed and know where to run. It’s a lot faster than soccer.

“I have made a lot of friends, all the girls are really nice.”
