Football for a cause

BANGALORE: Three students from Christ College are bringing the excitement of the world cup to town by organising a futsal tournament this month in which various colleges will participate. The profits from the five-a-side tournament will be given to the Come Together Foundation — a Delhi-based non-government organization that helps children from the economically backward sections of society with their education.

“We expect about 32 teams from colleges such as St Josephs, MS Ramaiah College, CMS college to participate,” said Zahan Anees, a final-year BBA student who is organising the tournament with classmates Thomson John and Udit Agarwal. “There will be a registration fee of Rs 350 per player,” he said.

The idea behind the tournament is to capitalise on the football fever in the backdrop of the FIFA World Cup and bring together people for a cause. “The tournament is open to colleges in Bangalore and will be hosted throughout the month. Registrations will open on Monday,” said Zahan.

Futsal is a variant of football played in a smaller area. Its name is derived from the Portuguese futebol de salão and the Spanish fútbol de salón, which can be translated as “hall football”. During the sport’s second world championships held in Madrid in 1985, the name fútbol de salón was used. Since then, all other names have been officially and internationally changed to futsal.

The three friends came up with the idea of organising such a tournament for a cause to give something back to society and got in touch with the Come Together Foundation. They are also on the lookout for sponsors. “We have spoken to a few brands. The response has been positive so far. However, we have not finalised any contracts yet,” Zahan said.
