Carlos Alberto Torres visits Aviva Stadium

Wednesday, 09 June 2010

Carlos Alberto Torres, the captain of the Brazil 1970 World Champion team considered the greatest team ever, was in Dublin recently to launch the Pele Goals for Life Cup competition.

Widely revered in his native Brazil and highly regarded around the world “O Capitao” (The Captain) as he is still known led Brazil to win the 1970 Jules Rimet World Cup and in the process scored what many consider the greatest World Cup goal ever, in the Final against Italy: click here

Carlos is arrived in Dublin recently to launch the “Pele Goals for Life” Cup on behalf of his great friend which will benefit the Little Prince Hospital in Curitiba, Brazil and the New Children's Hospital of Ireland.

The Little Prince Hospital is the largest children's hospital in Latin America and already plans are afoot for a close linkage between it and the New Children's Hospital of Ireland, due to open in 2014 (when Brazil will host the next World Cup).

The Competition is being organised by Don Mullan (European Ambassador for the Little Prince Hospital) and is expected to run over the next Christmas period. The idea is to attract 100 teams from across Ireland to enter a National 5 a side competition and in the process, raise funding to benefit both hospitals. Each team entering the competition will receive a limited edition set of Gold, Silver and Bronze Pele Goals for Life Medals, created by the Brazilian Mint, each set celebrating one of Pele's 1283 goals, and a Replica Brazil 1970 Shirt, personally hand signed by the great Pele.

The competition’s winning team will travel on a trip of a lifetime to the cradle of football, Brazil, to be guests of the legendary Pele at a Santos game at the famous Vila Belmiro stadium. It's a unique Dream prize of a lifetime waiting to be won by Ireland’s best 5 a side team.
