Boro beat Liverpool to reclain 4th placeMiddlesbrough Futsal Club can go into the summer break in positive mood after ending their season with an accomplished performance worthy of champions as they beat Liverpool 12-5 on Sunday at Thornaby Pavilion. The classy win also saw them leapfrog Leeds to finish in fourth place to help put a disappointing season firmly behind them.
It was always going to be a hit and miss season for Boro after losing over 20 years of experience and 60 goals from their title winning side, so to end up in fourth place and to be able to go into next season with a bit of momentum is a mini achievement in itself.
Liverpool weren’t a walkover as the scoreline suggests and Boro had to work extremely hard to get the breakthrough, despite dominating proceedings from the off. Liverpool had a surprise 2-0 lead at half time, with Eliot Brown in their goal to thank for keeping out the home side, but the second half saw Liverpool’s defence open up and the Teessiders were ruthless in front of goal scoring 12 in the second half.
Manager Damon Shaw was pleased with his team’s attitude and is confident they will be back on top form next season.
“I wanted a top class performance and double figures and they delivered. It was one of our best performances of the season and could have been 30 if Eliot wasn’t in such good form! It was also pleasing to see Robbie Bettson finish as top goalscorer – he’s worked so hard all season, even when we’ve been losing and I can always rely on him to deliver so he deserved that.
“We’ve got a long break now and we fully aim to be challenging for the title next season. I’ve got a good squad and they all have an extra season’s experience, and that will be valuable to us moving forward. I will also be holding open trials and looking to bring in one or two experienced players,” continued Shaw.
