News.gov.hkNew sports added to HK GamesFutsal and volleyball will be added to the third Hong Kong Games which will be held May 14 to June 5 next year, forming a total of eight events. Futsal is an indoor five-a-side form of soccer growing in popularity around the world.
The sports have been added to promote athlete and public participation in the games to boost the event's scale and popularity. The other sports are athletics, badminton, basketball, table tennis, swimming and tennis.
Speaking at the games' launch ceremony today, Secretary for Home Affairs Tsang Tak-sing called on the public to support the games. He said Hong Kong's 18 District Councils will recruit eligible athletes through an open selection process to represent their districts.
There will be prizes for the winner, and first and second runners-up in each of the eight competitions. The three districts accumulating the highest total scores will be crowned overall champion, and first and second runners-up.
New prizes known as "District with the Most Gold Medals" and "District with the Best Progress" will be introduced.
