Newham RecorderEastlea march on to National finals01 July 2010NEWHAM'S Eastlea School capped a dominant day for Essex schools' teams at the Eastern Region Futsal Finals, as their under-12 boys team claimed victory in Bedford.
Eastlea were among three winning Essex teams and will now represent the Eastern region at the National Finals in Sheffield.
The side picked up a 2-0 victory over Canon Palmer in a fierce local derby, while Shenfield under-14s won 1-0 against Royal Docks in an all-Essex final.
Shenfield also took home the under-12 girls' trophy, after a thrilling last-minute goal saw off Harris Middle School of Suffolk.
Essex schools have always performed well in the Nationals, including success for Canon Palmer's Boys when they were crowned under-14 champions, and Eastlea will justifiably look to follow suit.
Essex County FA Education & Schools Development Officer, Lana Gillard, was particularly pleased with the outstanding results.
"I was always confident our teams would be competitive," she insisted.
"I'm really proud that we have three representing, not only Essex, but the Eastern Region at the National Finals.
"It's a fantastic achievement for the players and teachers, especially as futsal is still establishing itself in the county."
Originating from Uruguay, futsal has taken off in a big way in recent years, with rules favouring skilful, creative play rather than the typically full-blooded English style.
