The Wingham ChronicleWingham High futsal champsWINGHAM High School's under 14 and under 16 Futsal teams have qualified for the State championships after competing in the regional schools Futsal competition at Saxby's Stadium.
Wingham High's under 14 boys team automatically qualified along with Chatham High School for the State Title because of insufficient entries in that age group.
The under 16 boys played six matches before qualifying for the semi finals. Wingham played the second Taree High team in the semi final and came back from a 2-1 deficit at half time to win. In the final, Wingham met the formidable Taree High School first team. Both teams had already played seven games and fatigue and injuries were starting to take their toll. The final was a thriller. Wingham started strongly to take a 4-2 lead but Taree pegged them back to level the match at full time. The match continued into golden goal extra time. Wingham had the better of extra time, but neither team were able to find the back of the net so the match moved into a nail biting penalty shoot-out. Wingham emerged triumphant 4-1.
The players received their medallions from Matt Pratt, development officer from Northern New South Wales Football. Mr Pratt stated that the standard of futsal played was higher than that played at the Newcastle Regional Schools Championships.
