Eric PalaciosAugust 2, 2010 They weren't playing for the Guam Football Association Calvo's Insurance Men's Futsal League title, but that didn't matter to the Paintco Strykers.
Last night at the Astumbo gym, the Strykers defeated the Cobras 6-3 in the consolation match to finish to 2010 season in third place.
The Strykers recorded five goals in the first period -- led by Christian Dickson's two --and went into intermission holding a 5-2 lead.
The Cobras' Gerald Aguon scored first for either team at the 18:48 mark that gave his team the quick lead.
But then, Strykers' goalie Julius Campos settled down, and his teammates came to life in a big way.
Dickson scored his first goal about 2 minutes later to tie the match at 1-all, and Masaya Kawauchi added a shot of his own a couple of minutes later that gave the Strykers a 2-1 lead.
Tatsuya Kawauchi got in on the spurt for the Stykers by rocketing a shot with 10:57 remaining in the first period, and then Dickson recorded his second score with 5:27 left.
Hiro Ashoshina capped the Strykers' scoring spree by booting a shot into the net with a minute and 54 seconds remaining, which gave them a 5-1 lead at that point.
Jan Aquino scored seconds later for the Cobras, which reduced their deficit to 2-5.
Defense was the theme for both teams in the second period as each only allowed the other to score a single goal in the half. The teams went back and forth for most of the half, and Campos and the Cobras' Jonathan Reyes tallied numerous shot-on-goal saves.
