The Manly DailyBowlo's lease preventing youth plans3 Aug 10by
Danielle NicastriLACK of a long-term lease is preventing Avalon Beach Bowling Club from organising a futsal competition in an effort to address community concerns over a lack of activities for young people.
A recent council meeting, to decide the fate of the former Avalon Girl Guides Hall, heard a number of young people and community members describe a pressing need for more youth and arts centres in the area.
Avalon Beach Bowling Club president Mike Doherty, who was at the meeting, said he has been approached by futsal (small-sided soccer) organisers and Rock ‘n’ Roll Bowl to use his grounds, but each backed away because the club only had a month-to-month lease.
“You’d think if we’re giving young people something to do and it’s popular and properly run, then most definitely (we would be allowed),” he said.
“Our grounds are ideal - we haven’t got any neighbours to be affected by the noise and lights certainly won’t be annoying anyone.”
A Pittwater Council spokeswoman said the bowling club’s grounds fall into the overall plan of management for Dunbar Park, which is currently being reviewed.
But Mr Doherty said he can’t imagine any changes to the use of the bowling greens because it is the home of competitive croquet players and the bowls community in Avalon.
“I know this is the initial step in consultation with the Avalon community,” he said.
“No doubt all their decisions will be transparent and undertaken to consider all interested parties.”
Mr Doherty is expected to meet with council staff tomorrow.
